Air Exchanger Install — Minnesota

Fresh-Air Ventilation & Air Exchanger Installation in Minnesota

Minnesota homes are sealed tight against the cold — which traps stale, humid, stuffy air inside all winter. An HRV or ERV air exchanger pulls that out and brings fresh air in without dumping your heat. Furnace Direct installs and replaces air exchangers across the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota.

What an air exchanger actually does

An air exchanger — also called an HRV (heat recovery ventilator) or ERV (energy recovery ventilator) — continuously swaps stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air. The trick is the recovery core: as the two air streams pass each other, the core transfers heat from your warm outgoing air into the cold incoming air, so you get fresh air without throwing away the heat you paid for. In a Minnesota winter that's the difference between a stuffy, condensation-prone house and a comfortable one.

HRV or ERV — which one?

HRV — Heat Recovery

Transfers heat only. The workhorse for most Minnesota homes — ideal for our long, cold, dry heating season where the goal is fresh air plus controlling winter humidity and window condensation.

ERV — Energy Recovery

Transfers heat and moisture. A good fit for very tightly-sealed or newer homes that get too dry in winter, since it holds a little more humidity indoors. We'll tell you honestly which fits.

You probably need one (or a replacement) if:
  • Windows fog up or drip with condensation in winter
  • The house feels stuffy, or cooking and pet odors linger
  • Indoor humidity feels high in winter or the air feels stale
  • Your current air exchanger is old, noisy, or the core is shot
  • You just tightened the house up (new windows, insulation, spray foam) and comfort got worse
