Zimmerman replacement triage

Keep the old core type — or change it on purpose

Highway 169 corridor and inland Sherburne plats are aging through first-generation exchangers. Triage the failure signs below, decide keep-or-change, then request a licensed swap quote. We do not sell cabinets retail.

Furnace Direct hauls failed recovery ventilators and installs the replacement in Zimmerman. Service-first when it saves you; intentional type changes when the envelope story shifted.

Eight failure signs we triage before quoting a haul-out

Core visibly clogged or warped

Wash once; if airflow stays dead, haul it.

Motor screams or will not start

Parts availability decides repair versus cabinet swap.

Controls dead, timer stuck, no continuous mode

Common on early 2000s boards — often easier to replace the unit.

Ice on interior cabinet every deep cold snap

Defrost strategy failing or wrong core for the moisture load.

House drier every year despite humidifier

Heat-recovery core may now be the wrong type after sealing.

Glass beading worse than before the unit died

You lost air change entirely; damp load points back to HRV.

Exhaust and intake hoods within a few feet

Short-circuiting outdoor air — fix elevations during swap.

Flexible duct crushed in a joist bay

Reuse the chase; replace the crushed run in the same job.

Keep the old core type, or change it on purpose

Keep HRV → HRV

Indoor moisture still dominates: glass beads, lingering bath steam, full occupancy. The cabinet failed; the physics did not.

Keep ERV → ERV

Dryness still dominates: static, humidifier thrash, sealed low-occupancy box. Replace like-for-like after confirming the core was clean.

Change HRV → ERV

Envelope sealed hard since the original install; winter air now arid; heat recovery is dumping moisture you want to keep.

Change ERV → HRV

Occupancy jumped or glass problems returned; energy recovery is holding vapor you now need to shed.

Pieces we try to keep versus pieces we throw

Keep sound rigid duct, good exterior hood locations, and legitimate electrical. Throw crushed flex, short-circuited hood pairs, seized motors, and cracked cores. Label photos beat model guesses.

Hauling the old cabinet

Included in swap scope when we install the new unit. Disconnect, bag, and remove the same day unless hazardous materials appear — rare on these residential cores.

Why this corridor sees swaps now

1990s–2000s Zimmerman growth aged into neglected first-gen units while later foam and window projects tightened shells. That coincidence creates service-or-swap calls — not a trophy ranking.

Swap questions homeowners ask here

Our 2001 builder HRV never had the core washed. Swap or service?

Service first when airflow is low but the cabinet is intact. Many Highway 169 corridor units regain life after a proper wash. Swap when cracks, seized motors, or unavailable parts show up.

When should we change from HRV to ERV on purpose?

When the house now runs arid after deep sealing and low winter occupancy — and the old heat-recovery core was dumping moisture you now want to keep. Do not change types just because a neighbor did.

Can you reuse existing hoods and duct?

Often yes if sizes and elevations are sound. Crushed flex, undersized ports, or hoods too close together get replaced in the same visit.

Is Zimmerman in a 'swap wave' for a marketing reason?

No ranking claimed. 1990s–2000s growth plats simply aged into first-generation control failures and neglected cores at the same time envelopes got tighter.

What if we have a raw damper instead of a real cabinet?

That is a first install, not a swap — even if someone called the damper an HRV for years. We price removal of the tap and addition of a true balanced core.
