Heat pump service searches climb in the Triad every fall. Here is a checklist to get ready before the first cold snap.
What you can do yourself
Replace the air filter. Clear leaves, mulch, and plants at least a couple of feet from the outdoor unit. Make sure the unit sits level and drains freely. Switch the thermostat to heat on a cool day and confirm warm air within a few minutes.
What a service visit should cover
Checking refrigerant pressures, testing the reversing valve and defrost control, testing backup heat strips, checking the capacitor and contactor, cleaning coils, and clearing the condensate drain.
Warning signs to fix before winter
Ice that does not clear, loud or grinding noises, frequent AUX or emergency heat use, or a burning smell when heat first runs, beyond a brief dust smell.
If it is old
Check its age with the serial number lookup. If it is near the end of its life, plan a replacement before it fails in January. See repair or replace.
