Furnace Inducer Motor Guide: What It Does and When It Fails

The inducer motor is the first component to start in every modern furnace heating cycle. It creates the draft necessary for safe combustion and proper venting. When it fails—often in the middle of a Minnesota winter—your furnace shuts down completely.

What the Inducer Motor Does

The inducer motor (also called the draft inducer or combustion air inducer) spins a fan that pulls air through the heat exchanger and pushes combustion gases out the flue or PVC vent pipe. By creating negative pressure, it also closes the pressure switch, signaling the control board that it's safe to begin the ignition sequence. It runs throughout the entire heating cycle and for a short purge period after the burner shuts off.

Signs of Inducer Motor Failure

Loud squealing or grinding noise at startup—often the first warning sign as bearings wear. Pressure switch fault codes (3 flashes on Goodman) when the motor can't generate adequate draft. Furnace won't start at all if motor is completely seized. Burning smell from a failing motor winding.

Minnesota Cold Weather and Inducer Motors

Inducer motors work harder in extreme cold because denser cold air requires more energy to move through the heat exchanger. Motors already weakened by age often fail on the coldest nights—when you need heat most. Bearing lubrication also thickens in cold, accelerating wear on older motors.

Replacement Cost and Considerations

Inducer motor replacement typically costs $300–$600 including labor. On furnaces over 15 years old, full replacement may make more economic sense. See our pressure switch guide, lifespan guide, and cost guide. Furnace Direct carries Goodman systems factory-direct.
