The control board is the brain of your furnace—it orchestrates every component from ignition to blower operation. When the control board fails, diagnosing and replacing it correctly is critical, especially during a Minnesota winter.

What a Furnace Control Board Does

The control board receives signals from the thermostat and safety sensors, then sequences the heating cycle in order: inducer motor start → pressure switch verification → ignitor warm-up → gas valve open → burner ignition → flame sensor verification → blower motor start. If any step fails or a safety sensor trips, the board shuts down the sequence and stores a fault code.

Reading Goodman Fault Codes

Modern Goodman furnaces display fault codes via LED flash patterns on the control board, visible through the furnace inspection window. Common codes: 3 flashes = pressure switch fault, 4 flashes = open high limit, 6 flashes = gas valve/ignition fault. Consult your model's manual for the complete code list.

Signs of Control Board Failure

Random shutdowns with no consistent fault code. Components not receiving power despite good wiring. Furnace won't sequence past a certain step. Burn marks or visible damage on the board itself.
