Blue Springs, in eastern Jackson County roughly 17 miles from Kansas City, grew fast in the 1980s and 1990s. Today about 60,000 residents live on nearly 23 square miles, and the median home was built in 1986. That makes Blue Springs a good test case for the heat pump question: these houses were mostly built with central air, standard-sized ductwork, and gas furnaces that are now on their second or third replacement cycle.

How Blue Springs heats today

Of roughly 22,900 occupied homes, about 70% heat with natural gas and 28% with electricity — a bigger electric share than many older KC suburbs. Seventy percent of the housing is detached single-family.

Comparing the options

Setup Fits best when
Gas furnace + AC You want the hottest supply air on zero-degree nights and already have gas.
Heat pump + gas furnace (dual fuel) Your AC condenser is due anyway; the pump covers spring and fall, gas covers deep winter.
Heat pump + air handler The home is all-electric and currently relies on resistance strips.

The 1980s-house details that matter

Builders of this era often tucked a furnace in an unfinished basement or a garage-adjacent utility room, with a single return in the hall. A heat pump moves more air at lower temperature, so a cramped return can make it noisy and less efficient. Flex duct in the attic over a bonus room is another common weak spot worth sealing during the swap.

If you stay with gas, a two-stage gas furnace smooths out the temperature swings that single-stage units from the 90s are known for. If you're one of the electric-heat households, pairing a pump with an air handler generally cuts the strip-heat hours sharply.
