Every AC sold today carries a SEER2 rating, every salesperson leans on it, and almost nobody explains what the number is worth in dollars. Here's SEER2 in plain English, including the part the pitch leaves out: when a higher rating stops paying for itself.

What SEER2 Measures

SEER2 is seasonal cooling output divided by electricity consumed, tested under conditions that simulate real ductwork static pressure (the “2” marks the tougher 2023 test).   • Real-world results. A high-SEER2 unit on leaky ducts with a sloppy charge performs like a low one. Installation quality eats rating differences for breakfast.
  • Sizing. An oversized 17 SEER2 system short-cycles its efficiency away. Right-sized beats highly-rated.

  • Short cooling season or tight budget: 13.4–14.3 SEER2, sized right
  • Long, hot season, 10+ year horizon: 15.2 SEER2 — the consistent payback winner
  • Humidity complaints or comfort-first buyers: step to inverter/variable-speed and treat the efficiency as a bonus
